Pretty much
everyone who decided to do German in year 11 was only looking forward to one
thing. No, not the end of year exams, silly or Her Breinstampf’s dry humor! It
was the infamous German Camp! Herr Breinstampf was the teacher behind all the
fun. He organized the 4 fun filled days we experienced in May.
Twenty-two of us decided to take the opportunity and went on this camp to visit
Hahndorf and the Barossa Valley, South Australia.
Two other schools came along
with us to share the fun we experienced. They were, Melton SC and McKinnon SC.
We thought at first it wouldn’t be fun if we were going with other schools, but
that all changed when we all got to meet each other, and become good friends
throughout camp.
The first day was mainly filled
with driving to get to Hahndorf, with many of us listening to our disc-mans and
meeting students from the other schools. We were also given an “activity”
booklet, which only meant more GERMAN work!
We arrived at the Hahndorf
Resort, unloaded our gear and had a fun time “ cabin hopping” (Herr Breinstampf
had no idea!) Those nights were when all the schools got to know each other a
little better! Our cabin consisted of, Felicity, Wendy, Ebony, Vicki and my
self. Crystal, Stacey, Julie, Natasha and Louise, were in the cabin next to us.
We visited many places on the
second day, like Boarder Town, the Herberg Family Tree (It is this massive tree,
where some guy lived there with his family for some time!), Bethany to visit and
learn about the history of the German settlers also to see interesting churches
and cemeteries. The highlight of the second day was visiting the Barossa Valley
Winery. All of us got to taste test some of the fines non-alcoholic wine that
the Barossa Valley had to offer! Plus we all had the opportunity to buy wine for
our “parents”(wink, wink).
On the third day, we got to
check out what Hahndorf Village had to offer. We had to conduct an interview
(auf Deutsch) preferably with a German Tourist. Bianca, Felicity and I tracked
down this cute old lady who owned a shop in Hahndorf. After we spoke to her she
gave us these groovy pens! (Herr Breinstampf spoke to her later and she said all
of her pens went missing! She had better of been joking!)
On the last day, it was time to
head back, and all of us went sick with the cameras when it was time to drop of
the other kids back to their schools. I think some of us kept in touch. Which
was all-good.
It was a great camp to go on,
everyone had a fantastic time, and I think all of the year 11’s next year should
definitely go, because if not, I’m sure all of us wouldn’t mind going again!
